Uzbekistan’s economy is evolving rapidly, with thousands of economics graduates entering the job market each year. In 2023/2024, 267,918 students studied economics, 43.5% of them in Tashkent. However, opportunities to apply their knowledge beyond the classroom remain limited, especially in the regions.

Recognizing this gap, New Uzbekistan University, in collaboration with the Stone Center for Research on Wealth Inequality and Mobility at the University of Chicago, launched Summer Institute 2024—an intensive academic program in July 2024. The program allowed undergraduate and master’s students to conduct research alongside leading economists, including Steven Neil Durlauf, Lawrence E. Blume, Eyal Winter, Klaus Desmet, and Felix Elwert. The program received positive feedback from both participants and organizers, strengthening the need for a structured platform where young economists could continue learning, collaborating, and contributing to Uzbekistan’s economic development.

In response, the Young Economists Society of Uzbekistan (YESU) was established. YESU provides a space for future professionals to engage with industry leaders, tackle real-world economic challenges in both the public and private sectors, and develop practical projects that contribute to Uzbekistan’s economy.

Values

Quality Education and Scientific Approach

We give our members access to educational resources to encourage evidence-based economic analyses and research. By connecting with experts and examining their work, our members gain practical insights and advance their academic performance.

Collaborative Ecosystem

As a bridge between driven young minds and key stakeholders — government, businesses, and public organizations — we stimulate dialogue and collaboration, as well as drive impact while building partnerships with academic institutions and professionals.

Leadership and Empowerment

Our membership program develops leadership skills by encouraging active involvement and supporting youth-led projects, empowering members to become confident leaders and changemakers in their fields.

Context-Driven Growth

We integrate cultural and societal perspectives into YESU’s initiatives by developing a framework that aligns with Uzbekistan’s interests and its administrative policies. Combined with YESU’s collaboration with international experts, this approach helps specialists we cultivate remain relevant both domestically and globally

Global Perspective

Economics does not operate in isolation. To drive Uzbekistan's economic growth, we connect our members with global leaders, exposing them to universal development paths and nurturing a global mindset.

Sustainability and Inclusion

Through inclusive initiatives and sustainable practices aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals such as Quality Education, Decent Work and Economic Growth, Reduced Inequalities, Sustainable Cities and Communities, and Partnerships for the Goals — we enable our members to make impactful contributions.

Our Strategy

1

Bridge the Talent Gap Early

Uzbekistan faces a significant talent gap in its economic sector, despite having over 200 universities that offer strong foundational knowledge. A key challenge is the limited exposure to international expertise within existing academic programs. Young Economists Society of Uzbekistan aims to address this gap giving students the resources, mentorship, and opportunities to engage with global economic leaders.

2

Raise Economic Literacy

Economic literacy is crucial for sustainable development. By organizing educational activities and providing digital resources, Young Economists Society of Uzbekistan aims to enhance its members' understanding of economic principles. As a result, our members will become ambassadors of economic literacy, promoting these principles within their communities and beyond. This ripple effect will foster a more informed and economically savvy population.

3

Promote Research and Innovation

Young Economists Society of Uzbekistan stimulates research and innovation in economics among young people. By encouraging members to engage in research activities, the Society will promote a culture of inquiry and critical thinking. An important part of this mission is connecting members with world-class researchers and scientists in economics, providing opportunities to learn from leading experts.

4

Enhance Networking Opportunities

The Society will serve as a networking hub, connecting young economists with leading experts, scientists, and policymakers. It will establish links with economic societies at top global universities and engage with prominent organizations, as well as local leaders and industry professionals. Through a variety of networking formats—including mentorship programs, roundtables, and exclusive events—we create opportunities for our members to exchange ideas, gain insights, and turn their knowledge into action.
